We aimed to improve the rough and fine finger motions of the upper limbs on the paralyzed side of patients with cerebral apoplectic hemiplegia, and to improve their activities of daily living. We therefore devised a practical motion test for the upper limbs in order to measure the abilities of the upper limbs on the paralyzed side in situations similar to activities used in daily life.

Sixty-four patients with cerebral apoplectic hemiplegia were assessed using the practical motion test for the upper limbs and Manual Function Test (MFT) at the start of treatment and were assessed once every two weeks. The relation between the test subject and Manual Function Score (MFS) was analyzed.

As a result, we successfully devised a means of improving practical motions at each stage of MFS. These means can be used to teach patients about activities in their daily lives which use the upper limbs on the paralyzed side and thus help restore upper limb functions.
