Compared to indoor activities, walking outdoors had a calming effect on patients with moderate Alzheimer's disease (AD patients). This study investigated influence of indoor and outdoor walks on stress degree and vital signs in moderate AD patient using a salivary amylase monitor. We also verified the possibility of the objective stress reduction effect that was difficult to quantify through observation. Results indicate the outdoor walk reduced stress, and positively affected vital signs. Furthermore, the outdoor walk reduced wandering and anxiety. This study indicates the benefits of incorporating outdoor walks into an occupational therapy program.
