The purpose of this study is to focus attention on residents at a geriatric health service facility who maintain their motivation, and investigate the factors related to the maintenance of their motivation.

Eight residents who sustain motivation at a geriatric health service facility were asked about the factors related to the maintenance of their motivation. These narratives were qualitatively analyzed.

As a result, “Affirmative perception of living in the facility”, “Affirmative perception for themselves”, “A positive way of life” and so on were important for the residents' maintaining motivation. Those were followed by “Something to do in the near future”, and “Having goals and taking action to achieve those goals”. In addition, this research suggests that “Good relationships with other people” is related to the maintenance of motivation in the facility.

If occupational therapists take these results into account, they may be able to contribute to maintaining motivation in residents who live in a geriatric health service facility.
