Purpose: To examine the effect of exercise on physical function.
Method: This study involved thirty two psychiatric patients hospitalized in a long-term care program. Participants attended a one-month session involving repetitive movement exercise consisting of standing up and sitting down in a chair (“stand-up training”). A fitness test (Functional Reach Test) and questionnaires were given and evaluated before and after each stand-up training session.
Results: The overall average of all participants' performance was 97.1±45.0 times per session. In addition, the Functional Reach Test showed significant improvement. The questionnaire results suggested a positive effect while the number of people who commented “feeling tired” was greatly reduced.
A comfortable environment and emotional support from staff members raised patients' motivation and facilitated the training.
