Using a self-administered survey involving 81 schizophrenic patients who had been admitted to a psychiatric hospital for more than 1 year, we analyzed patients' attitudes towards discharge and related factors. The results showed that 78% of the patients thought about discharge, 59% of the patients wanted to be discharged, and 52% of the patients thought that they could be discharged. Multiple regression analyses were conducted using attitudes about discharge as dependent variables, andsignificant independent factors included a lack of confidence, expectations for family acceptance, and the number of social resources that were perceived necessary. Since long-term hospitalization complicates family situations, rehabilitation needs to be performed while focusing on regaining confidence and using social resources.
