 Objectives

The purpose of this study is to determine whether or not the enjoyment of activities by ambulatory rehabilitation is related to the Functional Independence Measure (FIM). Enjoyment was assessed through the following impressions: “was absorbed”, “tried hard”, “difficult”, “physically challenged”, “felt inferior” and “want to do it again”.

 Method

29 people participated in the study, and their average age was 83.2 (SD=7.18). The subjects participated in 77 activities, and each participant was interviewed immediately after the activity. There were seven categories in the questionnaire: “fun”, “was absorbed”, “tried hard”, “difficult”, “physically challenged”, “felt inferior”, and “want to do it again”. Each section had a 4-point scale to choose from: “very ~”, “moderately ~”, “not so ~”, and “not at all”. Spearman's rank correlation coefficients were determined for the seven categories above and FIM scores, and the significance of these eight areas was examined.

 Results

A positive correlation was found between “Enjoyment through activities” and each of these areas:was absorbed, tried hard, want to do it again, and FIM.

 Conclusion

These results indicate that enjoyment is related to powers of attention and concentration, a feeling of having tried hard and the motivation for continuing an activity.

There seems to be a relationship between enhancing enjoyment and decreasing the amount of help at home.
