We conducted a questionnaire survey regarding collaboration between speech-language-hearing therapists (SLHTs) and schools for special needs education in Saitama prefecture and examined the roles and responsibilities of Saitama Speech-language-hearing Association. All the 46 schools in Saitama responded, of which 23 (50%) schools reported using SLHTs as outside experts, and 20 prefectural schools reported using SLHTs as special part-time lecturers. No schools reported employing full-time SLHTs. SLHTs in schools gave advice and support to teachers, made observations and assessments of the students, and provided a broad range of services concerning language, speech, articulation, feeding and swallowing disorders. All the schools utilizing SLHTs answered that placing SLHTs in school has helped them greatly in understanding the problems of students and finding out teaching methods specific for them. There were many schools that reported that they expected SLHTs would "continue to provide advice based on their professional knowledge and skills" and "contribute to improvement of teachers' teaching skills". Based on these findings, it was suggested that an important role of the prefectural SLHT association would be to facilitate further interaction between schools and SLHTs and to contribute to increasing human resources for special needs education.
