Dorsal dissection and subsequent taping are one of the most commonly used surgical techniques in the dissection of vessels and target organs. Because laparoscopic dorsal dissection proceeds as if digging a tunnel, it is sometimes difficult to determine whether the proper direction and sufficient depth of dissection are obtained. To solve this problem, we developed a device called “Laparopointer®” that illuminates the tip of the forceps and uses transmitted light to instantly recognize the thinnest and safest site for tunneling. The most useful characteristic of Laparopointer® is that a surgeon can continue the operative dissection without hesitation using transmitted light as a guide, thus improving the operative safety and shortening the operative time.
