Hypoxemia without dyspnea is called “silent hypoxemia” and has attracted attention due to the COVID-19 epidemic. Dyspnea develops when ventilation is inadequate to meet the ventilatory drive of the respiratory center, and is caused by hypoxemia, hypercapnia, low blood pH, and reduction of lung compliance. In patients with COVID-19 infection, hypoxemia is caused by various factors. Factors that may lead to silent hypoxemia include near normal respiratory system compliance in the early stages of the condition, the effects of a virus on the nervous system, and high temperature. Silent hypoxemia can occur not only in patients with COVID-19, but also in normal subjects and those with other diseases.
