集中治療医学の進歩に伴い重症患者の救命率が向上した。ICU退室後の患者は元気になって幸せに暮らしているのだろうか？　残念ながら，身体・精神・認知機能障害を抱え生活の質（QOL）が低下した患者もおり，死亡・再入院リスクも高い。患者の家族や友人も心身の不調を抱えることが判明している。集中治療後症候群（PICS）をいかに予防し介入していくか，十分なエビデンスのあるものは少ない。場合によっては，長い道のりとなることもある患者・家族のサバイバーシップに医療者としていかにかかわっていくか，今後の課題である。

Intensive care survivors often suffer from “Post Intensive Care Syndrome” （PICS）, which negatively affects patients' physical, mental and cognitive functions and quality of life. It also has a huge burden on the patients' caregivers. Patients are not only at risk of dying, but also of rehospitalization. Although various interventions are under investigation to prevent or ameliorate the impact of PICS, none have been convincingly shown to be effective. The concept of ICU survivorship should be explained to everyone involved in the care of patients surviving critical illness.
