Rounds in the ICU are one of the most important factors affecting the patient-physician relationship and communication between health care providers, which has a significant impact on patient care. Patients are often not distressed by physician presentations at the bedside, but providers tend to prefer conference room presentations to bedside presentations. Multidisciplinary team rounds facilitate communication between health care providers and may improve patient outcomes. Conferences held in conference rooms have the potential to increase efficiency and tend to be preferred by providers, but they can result in decisions about treatment without seeing the patient. Factors that can improve the quality of rounds include multidisciplinary rounds, clarifying the roles of health care providers, standardizing location, time, and team composition, using standardized tools such as checklists, minimizing interruptions to rounds, and documenting goals in the medical record. No evidence-based educational methods in the ICU exist yet. It is important to understand the advantages and disadvantages of bedside rounds and room-based conferences and to use both.
