What should an intensivist be ?

重症患者の管理と治療を専門とする「集中治療」という専門科が本邦でも認知されるようになってきた。しかし，集中治療医に求められる役割や能力について論じられている文献はほとんど見つからない。本稿では，集中治療医に求められる役割と能力について筆者の私見に基づいて論じる。さらに，集中治療スタッフのバーンアウト症候群について説明し，どのようにすればバーンアウト症候群を予防することができるかについて考察する。

An intensivist is a physician who specializes in the care of critically ill patients in the intensive care unit and the demand for intensivists in Japan is rapidly increasing. In this chapter, we discuss competencies and skills that a physician should acquire to function as an “ideal intensivist”. In addition, measures to help prevent burnout syndrome of ICU staff are proposed.
