Sir William Osler said “The practice of medicine is an art, based on science.” We are medical practitioners, so we have to learn and understand science such as physiology and physics. Laplace's law which describes the relationship of pressure, tension, and radius may apply to organs with a lumen. The Hagen-Poiseuille law describes the relationship of flow, radius, viscosity, and pressure and may apply to blood flow and infusion therapy. Bernoulli's law which describes the relationship of velocity and pressure may apply to patients with COPD. Our clinical understanding is deepened by recognizing the science discovered by great pioneers.
