In nutritional therapy for critically ill patients, immunonutrition, such as arginine, glutamine, and omega-3 fatty acids have been studied to determine if their administration improves clinical outcomes. Although some clinical studies favored these nutrients, as of 2018, however, the clinical effect of these nutrients has not been associated with improved outcomes. It may still be important to review the progress of this topic to discuss future studies. This paper will cover how each of these nutrients are studied in terms of their pathophysiological aspects, what major clinical trials prove, and possibilities for future studies.
