In this article, we review epidemiologic studies of systemic rheumatic disease and vasculitis in the intensive care unit identified using the key words epidemiology, rheumatic disease, autoimmune disease, intensive care unit in PubMed. Before ICU admission, most patients have already been diagnosed with these diseases, while only 0.3 to 0.6% of patients are diagnosed after ICU admission. Infections and exacerbation of the primary disease are two major reasons for ICU admission. Studies show that the characteristics of patients with systemic rheumatic disease and vasculitis requiring ICU admission vary among countries. The ICU mortality of these patients is reported to be 17-33%, while the hospital mortality is 27-43%. However, several studies showed that the mortality of patients with systemic rheumatic diseases or vasculitis staying in the ICU may not be higher than other ICU patients, Severity scores including APACHE II and SOFA scores are important predictors of mortality in these patients.
