Ventilators specifically intended for use in the intensive care unit (ICU) are often called ICU ventilators. When ICU ventilators are being used, basic troubleshooting for DOPE (Displacement of breathing tube, Obstruction, Pneumothorax, Equipment failure) is essential, while asynchrony is another concern as spontaneous breathing efforts are preserved in a majority of mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU. Knowledge-based intelligent choice of the ventilator model may reduce the potential for asynchrony. Differences in the internal structure of the gas supply, display of flow rate, and effects of compression volume are common concerns, while leak compensation, responsiveness to inspiratory effort and accuracy of increases in pressure also differ depending on the model. All of these differences may affect the patient's work of breathing. To meet patient needs, the appropriate choice of ventilator model may be important for efficient troubleshooting.
