The present study explored the relationship between life satisfaction and biographical work in middle-aged working men on chronic dialysis. Based on theory of illness trajectory and theory of symbolic interaction, it was hypothesized that biographical work which individuals make to understand the implications of their chronic illness and to make adjustment to their life plan would affect their life satisfaction. The data were collected using a questionnaire comprised of the Scale for Biography Recasting developed by the author, the Scale for Constructed Meaning of Illness translated by the author. Japanese translation of Purpose-In-Life-A Test, and questions regarding demographic information and subjective social functioning (n=86). Demographic information and subjective social functioning accounted for 23% of variance in life satisfaction. When biographical work was entered, further 26% of variance was explained (adj R2=.49, p<.001). It seems that biographical work strongly and independently predicts life satisfaction. In the context as preparation for dialysis, the longer the predialysis period, the higher would biographical work increase life satisfaction, and the lower would person factors affect life satisfaction. In the context as maintenance dialysis, biographical work takes its effect after the patient had learned to practically manage dialysis and as he/she goes through transition period to achieve new equilibrium. One implication from this study is that it is necessary to assess biographical work in order to design a nursing plan, which accommodates for various phase of illness trajectory.
