  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

This study examined the attitudes toward prenatal diagnoses and the possibility of attitudinal changes in medical and allied health students. After being given short scenarios, the subjects were asked to complete a questionnaire. The scenarios consisted of issues pertaining to Down's Syndrome and amniotic fluid tests. For example, a scenario may have read “A pregnant woman, whose first child had Down's Syndrome, is wondering if she should received an amniotic fluid test for her second pregnancy.”

The results are, 1) The attitudes toward prenatal diagnoses are more cautious now than in the 1970s. 2) The attitudes toward prenatal diagnoses are influenced greatly by the type of information given to them. For example. they are influenced most when ethical consideration or the daily life of a child with Down's Syndrome are mentioned.

It was also found that when the subjects were given information about the technical, ethical, and social aspects of prenatal diagnosis, the thought to the effect of “I do not want to give birth to a disabled child, so I will receive a prenatal diagnosis.” was discouraged.

These findings reinforce the importance of counseling concerning prenatal diagnosis.
