The purpose of this study was to estimate the effect of life events on depression of residents. We made a survey of 1,046 residents aged 40-69 in a farming village, Chiba Prefecture, and questioned 28 life events for the last one year. The correlation between life events and depression estimated by using Zung's Self-rating Depression Scale was analyzed by univariate analysis and multivariate analysis.

From univariate analysis using Mantel-heanszel method, significant risk variables for depression were found to be death of spouse, trouble with relatives, injury/disease, and retirement as distress but personal success as eustress.

From logistic regression analysis using gender and age as covariates, significant risk variables for depression were found to be inconstancy, death of spouse, trouble with a superior officer, injury/dis-ease and change of income as distress.
