Finnish Higher Education and Research in the European Framework
The Finnish educational system has developed rapidly during the past few decades. The first University was founded in Turku in 1640. At that time Turku was the capital of Finland and Finland was part of the Swedish Empire. In the early 19th century the university was transferred to Helsinki, because Finland came under Russian rule. The University of Helsinki is the oldest traditional university in Finland. In the early 20th century, during the first years of Finnish independence, new universities were founded in Helsinki and Turku. Especially after the Second World War many new universities were established in different parts of the country. Universities have been mainly state owned, but nowadays there are also universities owned by private organizations. (Varmola, 2002)
