In order to encourage the development of further research studies, I describe positive and negative findings of a search of nursing studies on the effect of exercise in preventing falls among the elderly. In a search of four different databases, I found only a small number of nursing studies on exercise for fall prevention. There are several possible reasons for the lack of research. First, because of the frailty of some elderly people, there are potential risks for health problems or accidents as a result of having elderly people do weight-bearing exercise and of measuring for outcomes. Another possible reason is that, even though the participants’ motor skills may improve, there is the potential for a decreased effectiveness of exercise in the prevention of falls. To overcome these problems, several improvements are necessary : 1) the development of a tool to identify and set standards for frailty and health conditions as criteria for participation in an exercise study, 2) increased knowledge of kinematics in order to create effective exercise programs for fall prevention, 3) development of methods for accurately evaluating the safety of exercise programs, 4) development of effective exercise programs to increase motor skills and decrease falls, and 5) effective involvement of nursing in the exercise programs.
