  • Abstract

Junior technologist: Can we use abbreviations in the figures or the tables of a paper ?

English editor: I am not very clear about rules on the use of abbreviations in illustrations. Different journals seem to use different rules. Let me make some suggestions that are based on common sense. A lot of readers do not read your paper. Instead they glance at the abstract and then the figures and tables. So, the abstract, figures, and tables should be designed so that the important points of your research will be understandable without reference to the text. Abbreviations are often useful in tables, because there is a need to write in columns, and one column is not very wide. So, you can use abbreviations in the table, and explain them in the table footnote. If a certain abbreviation① is used in only one of five tables, for example, explain it in the footnote of that table.
