PMR (polymyalgia rheumatica) is an inflammatory rheumatic condition especially seen in elderly people and often complicates TA (temporal arthritis), which is less common in Japan as compared with western countries. Clinical manifestations resemble elderly-onset rheumatoid arthritis. It is important to check malignancies because PMR is recognized as one of the paraneoplastic syndromes. PMR is characterized by its prompt response to glucocorticoids, usually in low to moderate doses unless underlying TA or malignancies are considered. It can be said that each patient's QOL depends on whether the physician is familiar with this disease or not.
