I．はじめに

　1971年Damadianが悪性腫瘍の診断にNMRが有効であると報告^1）して以来，NMRの医学への応用^2,3）が急速に進展してきた。現在では画像化の技術が導入^4）され，第三世代のX線CTに匹敵するMRI（magnetic resonance imaging）が得られようとしている。現在はプロトンより得られる情報を画像化しているが，燐，炭素，ナトリウムによる情報が画像化に使えるようになれば，生体内の物質移動や代謝について豊富な情報が得られると予想^5）される。

　今回われわれは頭頸部領域の疾患に対してMRIを使用する機会を得たので，その症例を供覧するとともにX線CTとの比較においてその有用性，問題点を検討し，若干の文献的考察を加えて報告する。

　Twenty one patients with lesions of head and neck were examined with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and X-ray computed tomography (CT). MRI is superior to CT for display of soft tissue and distinguishing a tumor from soft tissue. Moreover MRI can differentiate the vascular structures from the surrounding parenchyma without contrast material, and make various image planes.
