  • Look Inside

The phoneatric recovery of articulation disorders in a 59-year-old man with oral cancer who underwent reconstructive surgery with a pectoralis major myocutaneous flap and a ceramic artificial mandible after hemiglossectomy and partial mandibulectomy was presented.

The methods used for an assessment of articulatory abilities were to compare the patient's reading ability of short story and of 100 Japanese monosyllables with 5 normal volunteers who had no special training.

Despite of a great loss of lingual volume, the gradual tendency of recovery of articulation in speech was observed after 2 years postoperatively. The related problems were also discussed.
