  • Look Inside

During the period of 6 months, from March 1973 to October 1974, the authors made numerous visits to a number of isolated islands in Nagasaki prefecture for ENT consultations and treatments. The summary of their observations are as follow: (1) Among the patients seen, the number of young people, particularly in their twenties, were surprisingly few.

 (2) The number of patients that required continued medical attention was 29.3% and among these 10.7% required surgical treatment.

 (3) The affections noted were chronic rhinitis, chronic sinusitis, chronic tonsillitis, highly sensative laryngopharyngeal reflex and loss of conductive hearing in the aged. The morbidity here was much higher than compared to other normal areas of this country.

 (4) The urgent necessity of establishing a better means of care for the islanders is strongly emphasized by the authors.
