  • Look Inside

The principle of the otoplasty on cryptotia (pocket ear) rests on the procedure which releases the upper part of the helix buried under the overlying skin. This operation should be performed as soon as possible after the birth. The procedure, however, is divided into several surgical methods depending upon the age of the patient and the degree the cryptotia involved.

In infancy and when the cryptotia involvement is only the type Ⅰ and Ⅱ, the treatment may be sufficed by inserting subcutaneous suture or by mere use of plaster of paris patching.

Under the authors' method of operation the procedure could be applied relatively early in infancy, as at the age 3, with a minimal operative scarification with an aid of a small free-dermal graft placed on the posterior surface of the ear.
