  • Look Inside

Five cases of monopodal stapes are found by exploratory tympanotomy in congenital conductive deafness. Two cases were sisters.

The photographs of monopodal stapes in 4 cases, obtained by stapedectomy, are presented.

In three of the five cases, the postoperative hearing was improved to 30 dB loss. In the case of 4 year-old, the operation was unsuccessful because of the difficulty in postoperative treatment. In one case a flow of spinal fluid gushed out from the oval window which was difficult to stop. The anomaly of the inner ear in this case was revealed by tomographical study of the temporal bone.

The authors emphasize in monopodal stapes the stapedectomy is actually useful but the case should be thoroughly investigated for presence of inner ear anomalies.
