Cryosurgery is a form of therapy that employs an extremely low temperature in maintenance of life as in cryobiology. It has been extensively practiced in the United States for the last 10 years.

Cryosurgery has been introduced into this country since 5 years ago, but its popularity is yet to be seen except for a small number of clinicians. No appropriate terminology for cryosurgery in Japanese has, yet, been adopted.

The author takes up cryosurgery which seems highly adaptable for treatment of otolaryngological diseases from the standpoint of cryobiology in its numerous aspects as 1) The history of the procedure, 2) the agent for freezing and the required surgical equipments, 3) the essentials of the procedure, 4) the type of disease in which this form of treatment may be adopted, 5) the question of low-temperature from medical aspects of cryobiology and, 6) the future prospects of this form of treatment.
