  • Look Inside

Recently a series of Apollo-flights has settled some of the physiological problems faced in space exploration. However, for all the efforts and advancements made on the space engineering in the new environment, the problem like weightlessness is yet to be solved.

The author emphasizes the importance and necessity of further research on the otolith organs in connection to weightlessness. The present paper is concerned with morphological and physiological review of otolith organs and, after mentioning the anticipating problems in weightlessness, two representative experiments in weightlessness are described. Short term exposures to weightlessness by means of parabolic flights have offered numerous interesting opportunities by which studies on otolithic influences with vestibular responses were made. Using primates on spacecraft experiments, an extended weightlessness is now being planned to reveal the effects of altered sensory inputs on neurological structures such as otolith organs.
