　幼児が正常の言語発育を示さない場合，出来る丈早く，その原因を明らかにして，適当な対策を講じなければならない。その為にはまず，難聴によるものと，知能障害によるものとを区別する必要がある。

　一般に言語発育障害児を対象とした場合，聴力障害と知能障害とは互に影響し合う点が多い。即ち聴力障害があれば，言語を通しての知識の流入が障害されるので知能発育は停滞する。又逆に知能障害があれば言語発育は低下し，一見聴力障害がある様に思われる。

When any sign of deviation other than normal development of speech is detected in a child the cause of such deviation should be at once investigated. Categorically this cause of speech difficulty is due to either hard of hearing or mental defficiency. Gesell's test of speech development combined with hearing test for infants appeared to he highly satisf-actory in determining the cause of speech retardation.
