With 14 patients affected with Meniere's disease sodium ion concentration in the blood circulation is determined in each. And by means of water test and injections of cortisone circulatory retentions of sodium ion and fluids are studied. Sodium ion concentration is found to be decreased in 11 patients thus, studied. In some cases, however, when presence of sodium ion and fluid is found to be actually incresaed the number of attacks of dizziness was paradoxically decreased with improvement of hearing acuity. Under such circumstances the etiology of the disease cannot be satisfactorily explained by theory of fluid metabolism or retention alone. In the relation that seem to exist between adrenal function and the mechanism of sodium and fluid retention it is found that the major role is played by the hormone produced by pituitary adrenal system.
