TAKEYAMA AND YOSHIDA investigate the conditions under which phonation is carried out among children who are congenitally deaf and come to the following conclusions:

The vocal sounds that are most readily dilivered are word-sounds belonging to the first order like P, M and L and vowel sounds that are accomplished by wide-parting of the lips ; the more difficult are the second and third order sounds along withe those vowels that require close-parting of lips.

The ability with which these children accomplish for lip reading seems to follow the general trend along the line closely coinciding with the ease or difficulty that may be met with the dilivery of a given sound.
