SHIBATA reports a case of ankylosis of man-dibular joint that developed gradually as a sequ-eala to typhoid fever complicated at the time with an attack of otitis media of the left side. The patient, a man aged 26, had at a slight di-fficulty in opening his mouth, a condition which gradually worsened to a state where he no lon-ger was able to open at all.

The left mandibular joint showed, when expo-sed by surgical intervention, a firm ankylosis by trophic bony changes ; the three important stru-ctures of the articulation the tuberculum articu-lare, auditory process and the condyle firmly adherent to each other. Unlike cases that are found with ankylosis less severe in degree the process of freeing in this instance required an approach from the side of the condyle instead of that that of the tuberculum articulare. With the establishment of freeing of the joint the pa-tient was able to open and close his mouth at will.
