HOMMA tested, in treatment of acute otitis media, the efficacy of combined penicillin and streptomycin solution instilled directly into the midear cavity by means of a syringe and tympanic needle. The solution used contained a total volume of 0.5cc was of which 0.3cc was penicillin in strength of 20,000 units per cc and 0.2 cc streptomycin, 20mg per cc. One hundred and four ears were treated in this way; of this number 56 percent showed recovery within 5 to 9 days with majority showing recovery on the 6th day of treatment. Most cases required only 4 to 5 such instillations. According to whether or not the patients were recieving additional treatments they were divided into 3 groups: Group A, recieving sulfadrugs per oral or penicillin injection parenterally; Group B, recieving no additional medication; Group C, who were mostly children and infants under the care of Pediatrics Department for bronchitis of pneumonis and who beside here were treated by focal instillations. The most favorable results were obtained in patients who belonged to Group A, followed by Groups B and Clrespectively. But the paucity of results attained in Group C especially may be relegated to the presence of other complicating diseases.
