TAKAHATA reports a case of mastoiditis with fulminating onset occurring in a boy, aged 13. The. patient has been affected with chronic otitis media of the right ear but the left was involved in present attack. Surgical intervention, made approximately 5 days after the onset of disease, revealed the presence of pus not only in the mastoid cells but also in the cells of petrous pyramid. The patient recovered with minimum loss of hearing. The author believes that in case of fulminating attacks of otitis media, immediate surgical intervention should be instituted instead of relying upon the effects of antibiotics and chemotherapeutics which may merely serve in rendering the disease to becomz chronic by natura.
