Kawasaki finds by analysis of cases of otitis media, both, in the acute and chronic, which ultimately required operative treatment, that acute cases are generally caused by "mucosus" infections and the chronic by pseudo-cholestea-tomata.

He believes that a person whose mastoid pro-cess is well developed in air-cells is more vul-nerable to "mucosus" infections ; therefore mak-ing him more prone to attacks of acute mastoi-ditis, which when established, will show involve-ment of cells that might be most deeply and remotely seated. Which conception may explain some cf the cases that advance to mastoiditis that require operative treatments, despite the use of sulfa-drugs and penicillin.

He also believes that, a close relation to be existing between conditions causing pseudo-cholesteatoma and tuberculosis and, calls atten-tion the fact that, tuberculosis is an important factor to be considered when an operation is called for treatment of chronic otitis media.
