Takata studied 226 cases of otitis media in reference to the causative bacteria of this disease. Microscopic examinations were made on slide specimens takes from ear discharges at the time of paracentesis and later in the course of progress of the disease. (1) For the type of bacteria at the initial stage cf disease diplococcus pneumoniae were found in the majority of cases which was followed in turn by micrococcus catarrhalis, bacillus influenzae and "urinebactriae". (2) in cases where delayed healing had prevailed spheroid bacteria appeared to be acutely decreased in number with preponderance of rodshaped types in stead. The latter type was notedly met with in cases which failed to respond to sulfa and penicillin treatments in the initial stage of the infection.
