Niho says clinical recognition that ranula may be caused by branchiogenetic origin, as advocated by Neumann, is important. Bilateral ranular cysts were found in a male patient, 22 years of age, who later was completely relieved of the condition by operation. Reasons to believe these cysts originated from branchial anlage and were not simple ranula are based on the following facts. Generally rauulae are found as unilateral affection whereas it was bilateral in this case. The posterior end of the cysts reached the palatine arch ; the positon and extent of which coincided with that of the branchial anlage. Histologically they lined with columnar epithelium which were interspersed with ciliateed ones in places.
