In the newborn infants, the intraventricular hemorrhage which occurs almost exclusively in premature infants accounts for 20-40% of intracranial hemorrhage and is responsible for 8-15% of their motality.
The diagnosis of intraventricular hemorrhage is difficult to be established by ventricular tap and ventriculography alone.
In the past one year, we have experienced five cases of the intraventricular hemorrhage, all of which were in mature infants in contrast to the general concept. Three cases were successfully treated with ventricular irrigation followed by ventriculo-peritoneal shunt.
