  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

In guinea pigs with chronic methamphetamineintoxication an enlargement of the adrenals and amarked involution of the thymus were observed, while no sign of hyperglycemia was detected;those changes were assumed as non-specific stressreaction in the endocrine system.

The aerobic glycolytic activity in vitro in cerebral cortex slices of the intoxicated animals wasmuch reduced when incubated in the Krebs-Ringer medium containing Ca-, as well as in thefluid without Ca-. On the other hand, the respiratory and glycolytic response of the tissue tothe addition of 50mM K- was quite the same inboth groups of the intoxicated and control animals.

When cerebral cortex slices of normal controlswere incubated in the saline added with dialyzedserum of the intoxicated animals, a significant reduction in lactate formation ensued; this findingsuggests an occurrence of a glycolysis-inhibitingfactor or factors in the serum in the intoxicatedanimals.
