  • Look Inside

Previous studies in transient global amnesia (TGA) were reviewed. In 1956 Bender described patients with a single episode of confusion with amnesia. Subsequently, in 1958 and 1964, Fisher and Adams reported patients with similar brief episodes of memory loss and used the term transient global amnesia. This disorder, also called "ictus amnesique"in 1956 by Guyotat and Courjon, is now quite well known. Patients with TGA demonstrate the following symptoms : the attack occurs during middle age, abrupt onset, preservation of self-identity and consciousness, normal immediate recall, transient inability to acquire new information, a relative loss of mem-ory for recent events, and a variable retrograde amnesia lasting from days to years. Others recognize the patient's behavior as abnormal.Restlessness, bewilderment, or quietness, unchar-acteristic of the patient's usual behavior, may be present. Most often the patient asks repeated questions about present and recent activities. There are no accompanying important neuro-logical abnormalities. Episodes of TGA seldom last more than one day. Attacks are most often single but may recur.
