  • Look Inside

In the last decade, it has been established that the retinal ganglion cells of the cat can be classified into Y-, X-, and W-cells according to their response properties to photic stimuli. X-cells and Y-cells, which have concentrically organized on-center and off-center receptive fields and show sustained (X) and transient (Y) responses to the presentation of the luminance contrast, are considered to be distinct and homogeneous functional classes which extract a spatial difference in luminance (X) and a temporal change in luminance (Y), respectively.
