  • Look Inside

The present article reviews the recent progress in the morphological and biochemical studies onthe axonal cytoskeleton. In mammalian cells, three classes of filaments are recognized as major components of the cytoskeleton: microfilament (6 nm thick), 10nm- filament (10 nm thick), and microtubule (24 nm thick). The cytoskeleton of myelinated axons is structurally rather simple in its variety of components: it is mainly composed of longitudinally oriented microtubules and neurofilaments which are connected with each other by wispy filamentous structures.
