  • Abstract
  • Look Inside

While climbing and mossy fiber systems constitute main afferents of the cerebellar cortex, they also innervate the cerebellar nuclei, which are the sole output nuclei of the cerebellum. Projection patterns of single neurons of the two fiber systems were analyzed by reconstructing entire axonal trajectories in the rat. A single neuron of the inferior olive nucleus, the origin of the climbing fiber system, innervates the cerebellum nearly exclusively contralateral to the nucleus with six climbing fibers on average. Climbing fibers originating from a single neuron project to a single lobule, to neighboring lobules, or to separate lobules.
