Abstract

Trigeminal neuralgia (tic douloureux) is a well-known disease entity characterized by unilateral, proxysmal, lancinating pains in the distribution of the trigeminal nerve. Since the 19th century, numerous medical and surgical treatments have been tried and yet none has provided satisfactory results.

This report gives an overview of the various surgical procedures for the aleviation of tic pain, such as peripheral neurotomy or neurectomy, Gasserian ganglionectomy, retro-Gasserian rhizo-tomy, trigeminal tractotomy, radiofrequency coag-ulation and so forth.
