　1．歴史と方法

　amytalテストは，わが国で開発されたきわめてユニークな脳機能の観察法であり，急性・一過性の薬理学的大脳半球剔除術（an acute and temporary pharmacological hemispherectomy）とも呼ばれている。この方法は1949年にわが国で発表された（Wada，1949；Wada ＆ Kirikae，1949）^17,18）が，まもなく創始者とともに北米大陸に渡り，彼地において完成され，英文で発表される（Wada ＆ Rasmussen，1960）^19）に至り，広く世界に普及した。

　大脳機能の局在性もしくはlateralizationを観察する方法としては，すでにconventionalな神経学的ないし神経放射線学的方法に加えて^4），computer assisted tomography，positron emission tomography，nuclear magnetic resonance CT，人脳誘発電位，タキストスコープを用いた視覚性ならびに聴覚刺激と電鍵打叩法の組合わせなど生理学的検索法が続々と開発されかつ普及している今日^{5，9，13，15）}においては，amytalテストはもはや古典の領域に属するものと見なされるが，なおその応用如何によっては，多くの結実をもたらすものと考えられる。

　In order to investigate the lateralizing or localizing functions of brain, many tools are provided and contributory to the problem. Among these tools, Amytal test which is called as an acute and transient pharmacological hemispherectomy, could be still a very unique and distinguished method of identification of higher activities of central nervous system, although it had been already employed in practice for a long time since the pioneering in 1949.
