  • Look Inside

In this review article on the extrapyramidal functions, the author described the physiological roles of acetylcholine (Ach) in the striatum, mainly based on the findings obtained by the fundamental research for the last 10 years. It is generally accepted that most of the Ach neurons in the striatum are interneurons and receive a direct dopamine (DA) input by the ascending dopaminergic nigrostriatal neurons. The proposed existence of the descending cholinergic striatonigral neurons has been found to be improbable.
