Abstract

Family data of 299 probands with spinocere-bellar types, 163 with late cortical cerebellar atrophy (LCCA) and 180 with olivopontocere-bellar atrophy (OPCA) were analyzed.

Spinocerebellar types included cases with predominantly cerebellar ataxia combined with spasticity. Family patterns were not compatible with sex-linked inheritances. Consanguinity was 18% among the parents who were clinically normal but unelevated when one was affected. The genetic ratio in the former group was about 0.25 for cases occurring before 24 years of age. This suggested that younger cases with normal parents involved many recessives.
