Abstract

The cerebellum offers a useful model in which to study synaptogenesis in the central nervous system. The anatomy of the cerebellum is rela-tively well understood in both the adult and the developing young rat. Unitary activity of single neurons can be recorded by electrophysiological techniques, and much is known of cerebellar circuitry. Several genetic mutations in mice arc known to affect cerebellar structure at well-defin-ed neuronal or synaptic loci. Weaver mutation is characterized by the degeneration of granule cells in the several postnatal days.
